Common Masonry Brick Types

Burnt Clay Bricks

These are the most widely used types of bricks. They are made from shaping raw clay, dried, and fired in the kiln. Burnt clay bricks are usually used for residential construction as foundations, masonry walls, or columns but they can also be used for commercial and industrial settings as well. These are also among the cheapest types of bricks.

Concrete Bricks

These are also known as concrete blocks and concrete masonry units (CMUs). Concrete bricks can be manufactured in different colours as pigments are added during production so you can choose which one will suit your preference and style. These types of bricks are made from a mixture of powdered cement, water, sand, and gravel. CMUs have high compressive strength making them a perfect material for retaining walls and partitions.

Fly Ash Bricks

Fly ash bricks are made from a mixture of fly ash (a byproduct of coal combustions), cement, and water. These types of bricks offer various benefits including saving on labour costs and mortar consumption although the production of fly ash tends to pose a great threat to the environment - not the best choice if you’re opting for something eco-friendly.

Sand Lime Bricks

Sand lime bricks are made from high-pressurising the mixture of sand, lime, and water. They are cured using an autoclave and are sorted based on the weather resistance they offer (MW – Moderate Weathering, SW –Severe Weathering). These types of bricks offer aesthetic quality because of a much smoother surface which requires little to no plastering and they can be easily coloured. 

They are also cheaper to produce meaning they can be less expensive compared to the traditional bricks. Although sand lime bricks are prone to water damage which is why it is not recommended for foundational structures and they are best suited for external walls.

Different Types of Masonry Pointing

Masonry pointing is the process of finishing the mortar joints in between bricks or stones in a masonry wall or structure. Mortar joints are considered the weakest point and most vulnerable to damage in a masonry structure.

That is why it is a must to ensure the right type of pointing is used in your structure and that it is done properly by a fully qualified and experienced pointer (not a handyman). Not only that proper pointing will enhance the aesthetic appeal of your structure but can also enhance its durability and weather resistance.
